DESCRIPTION

Chinese watercolour painting on pith paper, dating to the 19th-century Qing period, depicting two workers engaged in an everyday task. One figure leans over a circular vessel set into a blue brick structure, while the second stands behind carrying a woven basket at shoulder height. Rich blue clothing contrasts with warm rust and cream tones, with fine detailing to the faces, basket and brickwork. Presented behind glass in a gilt frame with a pale blue mount decorated with geometric gold and blue lines. The frame and mount are later additions.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

The appeal of this small painting lies in its detailed occupational subject and vivid colours. The carefully rendered clothing, basket and working equipment provide several points of interest, while the broad decorative mount gives the miniature scene a substantial framed presentation.
