DESCRIPTION
A finely detailed 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty watercolor painting on pith paper depicting a court official standing in a garden setting. The figure wears richly decorated purple and blue robes embellished with dragons, waves, flowers and cloud motifs, together with a traditional court hat. He holds a green ruyi sceptre, a traditional symbol associated with good fortune and authority. Delicate branches, architectural elements and a geometric tiled floor complete the composition. The vivid colors and precise costume details are characteristic of Chinese pith paintings of the period. Presented behind glass with a cream mount and wood frame.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Chinese pith paintings became popular during the 19th century and are collected for their brilliant colors, delicate technique and detailed depictions of Qing Dynasty costume and social figures. Images of court officials are particularly appealing for their elaborate robes, rank imagery and ceremonial attributes.
