DESCRIPTION

A finely painted 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty watercolor portrait on delicate pith paper. The composition depicts a standing bearded official or dignitary shown in profile, wearing a dark purple formal robe and traditional official hat. Fine details include the long beard, necklace, embroidered cuffs and contrasting blue and red elements of the costume. The portrait is presented within an arched mount with blue textile trim, set behind glass in a substantial dark wood frame with traces of gilt decoration. The restrained composition and carefully rendered costume give the portrait a distinctive period character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chinese pith paintings of the 19th century frequently portrayed figures in characteristic costumes, including officials, merchants and other social types. Such works were particularly associated with the Chinese export art trade and are collected today for their delicate technique and detailed documentation of Qing period dress.
