| 📜 Description | Large Chinese export Porcelain Punch Bowl decorated in Famille Rose enamels with a central Armorial crest of the Hickes Family. The shield displays three fleurs-de-lis and is surmounted by a stag’s head crest, with elaborate scrolling mantling and floral sprays. The exterior is further adorned with scattered floral motifs and a gilt chain border at the rim. According to published references (see Chinese Armorial Porcelain by David Sanctuary Howard), the arms are recorded as: “Gules a fess wavy between three fleurs-de-lis or; crest a buck’s head couped at the shoulder, gorged with a chaplet vert.” Variations of the Hickes arms are known, with differences in the chaplet shown in the crest. The Essex branch is noted for a chaplet of cinquefoil leaves. This service was made for the Hickes family of Silton Hall in Yorkshire, a family with documented history dating back to the medieval period, including connections to Sir Baptist Hicks (Viscount Campden, d.1627). Collector’s Notes: Chinese Armorial Porcelain produced during the Qianlong Dynasty represents bespoke export wares commissioned by European aristocratic families. Bowls of this scale were used in social dining and are increasingly rare, particularly those with identifiable coats of arms referenced in scholarly works such as Howard’s study. This example is a documented Hickes service piece, adding strong provenance and collector appeal. |
