DESCRIPTION
A Chinese Qing Dynasty blue and white porcelain covered vase dating to the 19th century and made in the Kangxi revival tradition. The baluster body is painted in underglaze cobalt blue with figural panels depicting figures beneath flowering branches, surrounded by dense floral and foliate ornament. The fitted domed cover is decorated in matching blue and white and surmounted by a molded Foo lion finial. The base bears a four-character Kangxi mark, understood as an apocryphal revival mark rather than a Kangxi-period date mark. A decorative example of 19th century Chinese blue and white porcelain with strong period character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Kangxi-period blue and white porcelain remained highly influential throughout the Qing Dynasty, and later 19th century potters frequently revived its forms, decorative vocabulary and reign marks. Pieces of this type are collected for their traditional cobalt decoration, figural subjects and connection with the enduring Kangxi revival taste.
