DESCRIPTION
A Chinese Qing Dynasty porcelain plate decorated in Famille Rose enamels with a detailed narrative landscape scene. The composition depicts figures traveling through a mountainous setting, including an elderly figure being carried and another figure riding a horse. Trees, rocks, flowering plants and distant mountains complete the landscape, while a fine iron red line accents the rim. The restrained palette of turquoise, blue, purple, orange and black gives the scene an attractive late Qing character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Narrative figure scenes drawn from Chinese history, literature and traditional stories were popular subjects on Qing Dynasty porcelain. The iron red seal mark on the underside associates this example with the Tongzhi period, 1862-1874, complementing its characteristic 19th century Famille Rose decoration.
