DESCRIPTION

A Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain plate decorated in famille rose enamels with a narrative garden scene associated with the Romance of the Western Chamber. Figures appear within an architectural terrace setting surrounded by lotus, trees, flowering plants, and garden elements. The central scene is enclosed by a pink geometric border, while the broad rim carries colorful floral sprays and ornamental panels. The delicate palette and elaborate narrative decoration give the plate strong early Qing decorative character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

The Romance of the Western Chamber is one of China’s most celebrated classical dramas and tells the story of the scholar Zhang and Cui Yingying. Scenes from the romance became popular subjects on Chinese porcelain, allowing recognizable episodes from literature and theatre to be represented through detailed figural compositions. Such narrative decoration was particularly appealing on Qing dynasty porcelain made for both domestic and export markets.
