DESCRIPTION
Chinese porcelain plate decorated in famille rose enamels with an iron-red and gilt Buddhist lion beside blue rockwork, flowering peonies and auspicious objects. The elaborate border incorporates paired chilong beasts forming cartouches enclosing Buddhist symbols, interspersed with flowers and foliage against a finely painted iron-red scroll ground. Pink and blue bands define the shaped reserves, with gilding accentuating the lion and outer rim. A distinctive composition combining floral ornament with auspicious imagery.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The combination of a Buddhist lion, auspicious objects and chilong cartouches gives this plate particular decorative interest. The Yongzheng attribution is supplied by the seller; an old handwritten label on the reverse gives an alternative date of 1770.
