CONDITION

GOOD (4/5) – Light wear to enamels and gilding with minor firing imperfections and a small kiln flaw to the base. Minor chips to the rim and Y-shape hairline crack to the base. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

Fine Chinese export porcelain armorial plate produced for the Bourchier family during the Qianlong period.

The center is decorated with the Bourchier arms within an elaborate rococo cartouche, surrounded by delicate white enamel floral ornament and scattered famille rose flower sprays.

The border features finely painted floral motifs and gilt scroll decoration on a pale celadon-tinted ground.

Elegantly potted and finely painted, representing the high quality of mid-18th century Chinese export porcelain made for the British market.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

This service is illustrated and discussed by David Sanctuary Howard in Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Volume I, page 438, catalogue P15, where it is dated to the Ch’ien Lung period, circa 1755.

Howard identifies the arms as those of Bourchier: “Argent a cross engrailed gules between four water bougets sable,” with the crest of an old man’s head wearing a ducal coronet and cap. The service is associated with Richard Bourchier, Governor of Madras from 1750 to 1760, for whom the service was made.
