DESCRIPTION

A rare Chinese porcelain cup and saucer dating to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Both pieces are finely decorated in famille rose enamels with large overlapping pink lotus petals individually outlined and detailed in iron red. Delicate gilt and iron red floral ornament provides additional detail around the borders, while stylized floral sprays decorate the interior of the cup and the center of the saucer. The coordinated lotus design creates a particularly attractive and distinctive 18th century Chinese porcelain ensemble.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Lotus decoration has a long tradition in Chinese art and is associated with purity and refinement. During the Qianlong period, famille rose enamels allowed porcelain decorators to achieve subtle pink tones enhanced by fine iron red and gilt detailing. Complete or associated cup and saucer combinations with extensive lotus petal decoration are especially appealing to collectors of Qing Dynasty export and famille rose porcelain.
