DESCRIPTION
A decorative Chinese porcelain Gu form vase dating to the Qing Dynasty, 19th century, finely painted in the Famille Verte palette. The tall, slender body features a flared trumpet-shaped neck and spreading foot, decorated with lively scenes of warriors, mounted figures and attendants among stylized mountains and trees. Bright green, yellow, iron-red, pink and blue enamels contrast against a finely crackled ivory-white glaze. The upper and lower borders are finished with textured brown decorative bands featuring incised patterns. The underside bears a four-character Chenghua mark in brown. An attractive example of Qing period decorative porcelain with strong visual character and detailed narrative decoration.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Gu form vases were inspired by ancient Chinese bronze ritual vessels and remained popular in porcelain production throughout the Qing Dynasty. Famille Verte decoration is particularly admired for its vivid green enamels and detailed figurative scenes, including warriors and historical subjects. The Chenghua mark is considered apocryphal and does not indicate manufacture during the Ming Dynasty. This vase offers an appealing combination of traditional form, colourful decoration and historical character.
