DESCRIPTION
An attractive Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain ginger jar of rounded form, decorated in famille verte enamels with a lively continuous scene of mounted warriors, soldiers and attendants. The principal decoration features an armored warrior riding a brown horse and carrying a military banner, accompanied by figures in colorful traditional dress against stylized mountainous scenery. Vibrant green, iron-red, yellow and purple enamels contrast with the warm cream-colored crackle-glazed background. The short neck and lower body are framed by distinctive dark brown decorative bands with incised wave-like patterns. The recessed base bears a Chenghua-style character mark, understood as an apocryphal mark rather than an indication of Ming dynasty manufacture. A decorative example of Chinese porcelain with strong traditional character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Chinese crackle-glazed porcelain decorated with famille verte enamels was popular during the Qing dynasty, particularly in the 19th century. Scenes of warriors, horses and military processions often drew inspiration from Chinese historical literature and legendary battles. Chenghua-style marks were frequently used on later Chinese ceramics as references to earlier imperial porcelain traditions. The combination of colorful figural decoration, brown bands and a crackle-glazed surface makes this jar an appealing piece for collectors of antique Chinese ceramics.
