DESCRIPTION
An 18th century Chinese export porcelain cup and saucer dating to the Qianlong period, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with complementary landscape scenes. The saucer depicts pavilions, trees, rocks, distant buildings and a small boat within detailed ornamental borders. The cup continues the landscape decoration around its exterior and has a small painted motif to the interior. Both pieces are finished with gilt rims, providing a restrained contrast to the blue and white decoration. An attractive example of Qing Dynasty export porcelain produced for the European market.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Blue and white landscape decoration remained highly popular on Chinese export porcelain throughout the Qianlong period. Idealized scenes of pavilions, waterways, trees and boats became especially familiar in European collections and later influenced Western ceramic interpretations of Chinese landscape designs.
