DESCRIPTION
An attractive 18th century Chinese export porcelain tea bowl dating to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, decorated in the Mandarin famille rose palette. The exterior features finely painted figural scenes, including a mother and child in a garden setting, accompanied by further figures beside architectural features and a pavilion window. The decoration combines vivid blue, green, orange, pink and purple enamels with delicate black outlines and touches of gilt. The figural scenes are separated by elaborate pink diaper-pattern panels containing floral reserves and ornamental scrollwork. The interior is predominantly white glazed, with a delicate iron-red border beneath the rim and a small painted motif to the centre. The bowl has gently flared sides and a neatly formed circular foot, displaying the characteristic proportions of Chinese export tea wares.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Mandarin famille rose porcelain became particularly fashionable during the Qianlong period, when Chinese workshops produced richly decorated tea wares for the European export market. Figural compositions featuring women, children and garden settings were popular decorative subjects, often combined with intricate patterned borders and colourful enamel work. This tea bowl is an appealing example of 18th century Qing Dynasty export porcelain, retaining attractive period decoration despite its condition issues.
