DESCRIPTION
An attractive 18th century Chinese porcelain tea bowl dating to the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period, decorated in the Mandarin famille rose palette with a finely detailed domestic garden scene. The principal reserve depicts an elegantly dressed lady seated beside a table, accompanied by a young child and a standing female attendant holding a flowering branch. The figures are surrounded by traditional Chinese architecture, garden railings and a landscape painted in vivid pink, blue, green, orange and purple enamels. The central scene is framed by a richly detailed black diaper-pattern ground, embellished with gilt scrollwork and shaped reserves containing iron-red landscape and floral decoration. The combination of colourful figural painting, intricate geometric ornament and gilded borders gives the bowl a particularly decorative character. The porcelain has a gently flared form with a circular foot and a white glazed base, typical of Chinese export porcelain produced during the 18th century.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Mandarin famille rose porcelain became particularly fashionable during the Qianlong period (1736-1795), when Chinese workshops produced finely enamelled wares featuring elegant figures, family gatherings and scenes of domestic life. These compositions were especially popular in the European export market, where collectors admired their colourful decoration and detailed representations of Chinese society. The black diaper-pattern ground, gilded scroll borders and shaped figural reserves are characteristic decorative features associated with richly ornamented Qianlong export porcelain. This example is particularly appealing for its intimate mother-and-child subject, vibrant enamel palette and elaborate ornamental background, making it an attractive addition to a collection of 18th century Chinese famille rose porcelain.
