DESCRIPTION
An attractive Chinese export porcelain cup dating to the Qianlong period of the 18th century. The gently fluted body is painted in famille rose enamels with flowering sprays in pink, purple, green and orange. The upper border features delicate purple ribbons, floral elements and circular coin-like motifs beneath an orange gilt rim. A larger floral composition provides the principal decoration, while scattered blossoms continue around the body. The shaped handle and lightly lobed form complement the finely painted ornament and give the piece characteristic Georgian-period export appeal.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Famille rose porcelain formed an important part of the Chinese export trade during the Qianlong period, with European buyers particularly favoring brightly enamelled floral decoration. Cups of this type reflect the combination of Chinese porcelain craftsmanship and decorative designs intended for fashionable 18th-century Western tableware.
