FAIR/RESTORED (2/5) - Extensively cracked and historically restored with numerous old metal staple repairs visible across the reverse, including cracks extending through the center and border. DESCRIPTION
A large Chinese porcelain charger decorated in a vibrant famille rose palette with a prominent central peony surrounded by flowering plants and butterflies. The broad shaped border contains alternating floral reserves against a finely worked brown scroll ground, enriched with blue, turquoise, pink and gilt details. The scalloped outline gives the charger a particularly decorative profile. The extensive surviving staple repairs are characteristic of historic methods used to preserve valued ceramics after breakage. Despite its heavily restored condition, the charger retains strong color and considerable decorative character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Famille rose enamels became especially refined during the Yongzheng period, allowing Chinese porcelain painters to produce delicate tonal variations in flowers and other natural subjects. Large chargers with elaborate floral compositions were made as impressive decorative and table wares, and surviving examples provide an interesting record of both Qing porcelain decoration and historic ceramic repair practices.
