DESCRIPTION
A Chinese famille rose porcelain charger decorated with a finely painted garden scene of a cockerel, hen and chicks among flowering peonies and ornamental rockwork. The broad rim is enriched with colorful floral sprays and scrolling ornament, while gilt details highlight the birds and decoration. The soft pink, green, turquoise, orange and blue enamels are characteristic of the famille rose palette associated with Qing Dynasty porcelain of the 18th century. The charger has undergone extensive historic restoration, with numerous visible cracks and filled repairs throughout. Despite its condition, the detailed bird and flower subject retains considerable decorative appeal.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Cockerels, hens and chicks were popular subjects on Chinese famille rose porcelain, often combined with peonies and garden rockwork to create richly decorative scenes. The refined famille rose palette flourished during the Yongzheng period and became particularly important in Chinese porcelain during the 18th century. Large chargers with elaborate bird and floral compositions remain attractive examples of Qing decorative porcelain.
