DESCRIPTION

Finely potted Chinese porcelain brush pot of cylindrical form.

Decorated in famille verte enamels with a narrative garden scene depicting a scholar and monk observing the arrival of two ladies beside a bridge and pavilion.

The composition is enhanced with flowering branches, bamboo, rockwork, and architectural elements.

The interior bears a pale celadon-toned glaze, while the exterior displays delicate enamel painting in the Kangxi palette.

A refined example of Qing dynasty scholar’s desk porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Brush pots, or bitong, were essential objects on the scholar’s desk and often featured literary or theatrical subjects. The decoration on this example appears related to scenes from the Romance of the Western Chamber, a popular theme in Qing porcelain painting. Kangxi period famille verte wares remain highly regarded for their elegant drawing and vibrant enamel decoration.
