DESCRIPTION
A Chinese blue and white porcelain brush pot decorated with a continuous mountainous river landscape in underglaze cobalt blue. The scene features a pavilion, figures, trees, and rocky outcrops rendered in a free and expressive style. The cylindrical body is fitted with a pair of small applied lug handles and stands on a short foot rim. A pleasing example of a traditional scholar’s desk accessory from the late Qing period.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Brush pots, or bitong, were essential objects on the desks of Chinese scholars and were used to hold writing brushes. Blue and white porcelain examples with landscape decoration remain highly collectible for their association with the scholar’s studio and their enduring decorative appeal.
