DESCRIPTION

Chinese Qing Dynasty blue and white porcelain bowl cover painted in underglaze cobalt blue with flowering peonies, branches and foliage. The exterior includes several vertical columns of Chinese script together with a patterned border around the rim. A separate Kangxi style underglaze blue mark is painted inside the knop. The decoration and use of an earlier reign-style mark are characteristic of later Qing revival porcelain.

CHINESE SCRIPT

Visible Script: 景德鎮人間, 康熙年製, 江西公卿, 明白米

English: 景德鎮 means Jingdezhen. 人間 means among mankind or the human world. 康熙年製 means made during the Kangxi reign. 江西 means Jiangxi Province. 公卿 means high officials or dignitaries. The reading of the final characters 明白米 is uncertain from the photographs and their intended meaning cannot be stated confidently.

Mark: 康熙年製 – Made during the Kangxi reign. The mark is catalogued here as a Kangxi style revival mark and not as evidence that the piece dates to the Kangxi period.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province was China’s principal porcelain production center. During the later Qing period, potters frequently revived earlier blue and white styles and employed earlier reign marks, including Kangxi marks, in reference to celebrated seventeenth-century porcelain.
