CONDITION

FAIR/RESTORED (2/5) – Restoration and repair to the lower handle terminal with visible overpainting and glue residue. Minor gilt wear, firing spots, and age-related surface wear. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

An 18th century Chinese export porcelain tankard produced for the American market during the Qianlong period. The cylindrical body is decorated with finely painted blue floral medallions accented with gilt details and bordered by a rich cobalt blue rim band. Small scattered floral sprigs decorate the surrounding white ground. The simple strap handle retains traces of gilt decoration. A decorative and collectible example of early Chinese export porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chinese export porcelains were produced in large quantities for European and early American markets during the 18th century. Tankards of this form were popular household wares and often featured elegant blue and gilt decoration suited to Western tastes. Surviving examples with American market provenance remain sought after by collectors of export ceramics.
