DESCRIPTION

Fine Chinese blue and white porcelain plate decorated with the Daoist figure Lady Ma, also known as Magu, shown beneath a willow tree with a young attendant. The central scene includes birds, rockwork, and landscape details executed in delicate underglaze cobalt blue. The wide border features dense floral and scrolling decoration in classic Qing taste. The reverse is plain with an unmarked base. A decorative and scholarly example of Chinese export porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Lady Ma, or Magu, is a Daoist goddess associated with longevity and immortality in Chinese folklore. She frequently appears in Qing porcelain decoration carrying flowers, herbs, or peaches symbolic of long life and prosperity. Blue and white porcelain scenes of Daoist immortals remain highly collectible among students of Chinese ceramics and export wares.
