DESCRIPTION

An attractive Chinese carved jade plaque of gently arched form, decorated in low relief with a prominent taotie mask surrounded by flowing scrollwork and stylized dragon motifs. The pale celadon jade displays subtle russet and darker natural inclusions that enhance its appearance. Five drilled holes along the border suggest it was intended for suspension or mounting. A well-executed decorative carving inspired by ancient Chinese ritual jades.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Archaistic jade plaques became popular decorative works during the 20th century, drawing inspiration from Shang and Zhou dynasty ritual objects. The taotie mask is one of the most recognizable motifs in Chinese art, symbolizing strength, protection, and ancient tradition.
