CONDITION

FAIR (3/5) – Missing all three feet and both side handles. Gilt wear, surface staining, and general age-related wear. No major cracks observed. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

Small Chinese porcelain incense burner decorated with a pair of five-clawed dragons confronting one another across a flaming pearl. The dragons are painted in iron red with gilt highlights against a white ground, complemented by underglaze blue cloud scrolls. Originally made with three feet and two loop handles, all of which are now missing. Despite these losses, the decoration remains bright and attractive, making it a decorative display piece.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

The dragon pursuing the flaming pearl is one of the most important motifs in Chinese art, symbolizing wisdom, power, prosperity, and the pursuit of enlightenment. Iron red and gilt decoration combined with underglaze blue clouds reflects a traditional decorative style that continued to be produced by Chinese kilns into the late twentieth century.
