DESCRIPTION
A small Chinese porcelain vase of garlic head form with elegant rounded body and tall narrow neck. The vase is covered in a soft white glaze with an even network of crackled Ge type craquelure. The understated glaze and refined proportions give the piece a classic scholar object appearance. The recessed foot and darkened kiln-fired base are consistent with traditional ceramic production methods. A pleasing antique display piece with restrained aesthetic character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Ge type crackle wares have long been admired in Chinese ceramics for their intentionally crazed glaze surfaces inspired by Song dynasty prototypes. Small scholar vases of this type were appreciated for their simplicity and refined glaze effects. Examples continued to be produced during the Qing dynasty in homage to earlier classical forms.
