📜 Description
A rare and early Chinese export armorial porcelain plate, circa 1740, made during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, bearing the arms of Umfreville impaling Weld, with the Latin motto “PAX TUA DOMINE EST REQUIES MEA” (“Your peace, O Lord, is my rest”).

This plate is listed as Entry E11 in David Howard’s Chinese Armorial Porcelain. The design reflects the union of two prominent English families: the Umfrevilles of Northumberland and Welds of Lulworth, Dorset — notable recusant Catholics of the period. The rich famille rose and gilt enamels surround a detailed armorial crest featuring a griffin’s head erased and baroque mantling.

This armorial service would have been specially commissioned and imported at great cost, serving as a symbol of family status and identity.
