DESCRIPTION
A late 11th century Khmer stoneware lime pot with a compressed globular body raised on a short foot. The vessel is decorated with incised vertical bands beneath a rich dark brown glaze and features molded chicken head and tail finials flanking the neck. Produced during the Angkor period, this form was used for storing lime associated with betel chewing. A fine example of Southeast Asian medieval ceramics with an attractive, well-weathered surface.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Chicken-form lime pots are among the most recognizable ceramics of the Angkor period and were produced in mainland Southeast Asia during the 11th century. Comparable examples are held in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Accession No. 1984.498.1a,b), illustrating the importance of this distinctive Khmer stoneware form.
