DESCRIPTION
An attractive Sawankhalok stoneware kendi dating to the 14th century, featuring a rounded globular body with a flared neck and charming zoomorphic form. The vessel incorporates a stylized chicken head drinking spout opposite a tail-shaped handle.
The body is decorated with finely incised geometric cross-hatched motifs beneath a pale slip with remnants of dark underglaze. The surface displays authentic archaeological wear and burial patina, adding to its historic character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Kendi vessels were widely used throughout Southeast Asia for the storage and pouring of water without the lips touching the spout, making them suitable for ritual and everyday use. Sawankhalok ceramics from the Sukhothai period are highly regarded for their distinctive forms, refined stoneware bodies, and decorative incised designs, and are collected worldwide.
