DESCRIPTION
A Japanese porcelain cup dating to the Meiji period, decorated in underglaze blue on a pale white ground. The exterior features raised relief Shou motifs above a bold repeating petal border around the lower body, with blue lines defining the rim and foot. The cup has a gently flared profile and a neatly formed circular foot. An Eiraku mark is painted in blue within the recessed base. A decorative example of late 19th century Japanese blue and white porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Eiraku marked porcelain is associated with a long Japanese ceramic tradition and appears on a variety of finely decorated wares. The combination of relief work, underglaze blue decoration, and auspicious Shou imagery gives this small cup particular decorative and collecting interest.
