CONDITION

GOOD (4/5) – Attractive aged patina with surface wear, scattered rubbing to the silver inlay, minor verdigris and handling marks consistent with age. No obvious major damage noted from the photographs. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

A finely cast Japanese bronze usubata dating to the 19th century, from the late Edo to early Meiji period. The vessel stands on a wide circular base supported by three openwork lotus-throne style feet and surmounted by a broad flower-arranging tray.

The body is decorated on each side with finely detailed figurative scenes in relief, including a samurai or theatrical figure and a courtly figure beneath draped architectural elements. The decoration is enhanced with delicate silver inlay and engraved details.

Stylised openwork handles with scrolling floral forms flank the body, while the interior tray is ornamented with flying geese and reed motifs. The dark bronze patina and intricate workmanship give the piece strong decorative appeal.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Usubata were traditional Japanese bronze flower-arranging vessels used in Buddhist temples and formal ikebana displays. During the late Edo and Meiji periods, bronze craftsmen produced increasingly elaborate examples featuring high-relief decoration and mixed-metal inlay.

Pieces combining sculptural openwork, narrative scenes, and silver inlay are particularly sought after by collectors of Japanese metalwork and Meiji decorative arts.
