📜 Description
Heavy cast Japanese Bronze sculpture of a Sumo Wrestler, shown low to the ground in an expressive, wide-legged stance. The figure has a dark patinated surface with warm rubbed highlights across the shoulders, limbs and raised areas, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence. The underside of the feet shows wear and finishing marks consistent with age and handling. A striking modern figural work in the manner of Isamu Noguchi and his celebrated Tamanishiki / The Wrestler composition.
Collector’s Notes: Sculptures of the Sumo Wrestler subject are admired for their sense of mass, balance and tension. The name Tamanishiki refers to the famed Japanese wrestler and became especially associated with sculptural interpretations of the form in the 20th century.
