DESCRIPTION

An attractive antique oval snuff box constructed in white metal and mounted with polished blue stone panels, possibly chrysocolla. The stone displays vivid turquoise and deep blue coloration with contrasting cream matrix and irregular natural-looking veining. Further blue stone panels are present to the underside and interior, creating a particularly decorative appearance. The white metal body has simple moulded borders, a hinged lid and shaped front thumbpiece. The mineral identification is based on visual appearance only and has not been gemologically tested.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chrysocolla and other richly colored ornamental stones were valued for their individual patterns and striking natural coloration. Small stone-mounted boxes combine the appeal of antique personal objects with decorative mineral specimens, and each example has a distinctive appearance determined by the stone.
