DESCRIPTION
A finely turned wooden spindle or textile-related hand tool of long slender form, measuring approximately 20.5 cm in length. The cylindrical body displays attractive longitudinal wood grain with a warm brown patina developed through age and handling. One end terminates in a narrow projecting point, while the opposite end has a distinctive shaped terminal with a raised collar and conical point. The darker coloration around the terminals contrasts attractively with the lighter central shaft. A simple and tactile example of traditional turned wooden craftsmanship with an appealing utilitarian character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Traditional wooden spindles and related textile implements were practical working objects produced in numerous regional forms. Surviving examples are collected for their craftsmanship, patina, and association with historic domestic and cottage textile work. The precise origin, date, and original function of this example have not been established.
