DESCRIPTION
English ceramic tile made by Millwall Pottery, London, circa 1910. Decorated in cobalt blue against a softly toned white glaze, with a central pictorial scene framed by ornamental corner motifs. Drawing on the tradition of Dutch Delft tiles, the decoration combines expressive brushwork with generous areas of undecorated ground. An attractive architectural ceramic for individual display or arrangement alongside related tiles.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Millwall Pottery is associated with Frederick Garrard, whose tile production drew on earlier decorative traditions. Following Garrard’s death in 1893, John Lewis James continued production. This circa 1910 example belongs to that later period.
