DESCRIPTION
An attractive early 19th-century English Mason’s Ironstone deep plate, dating to circa 1820-1830, decorated in a vibrant famille rose inspired Chinoiserie pattern. The elaborate composition features flowering branches, stylised fruits and foliage, with a long-tailed bird perched among the blossoms. A prominent pink chrysanthemum provides a striking focal point, complemented by rich orange, green and yellow enamels, black transfer-printed outlines and gilt highlights. The plate has an elegant fluted body with a scalloped, wavy rim finished in gold. The reverse bears a faint impressed Mason’s Patent Ironstone China mark. A decorative example of early Mason’s production, combining Oriental-inspired ornament with the distinctive character of Georgian English ironstone.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Mason’s Patent Ironstone China was introduced in 1813 and became renowned for its durable ceramic body and richly decorated Oriental-inspired patterns. This design closely corresponds to a documented example by C. & J. Mason, dated circa 1820-1830, in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection, produced at Lane Delph, Staffordshire. The combination of Chinoiserie flowering plants, a perched bird, colourful enamels and gilding reflects the popularity of Chinese-inspired decoration in early 19th-century English ceramics.
