One side depicts the poet Meng Haoran walking with an attendant through a wintery Landscape, beneath sparse branches suggestive of a Prunus Tree. The reverse shows a tranquil mountainous scene with trees, rocks, and distant peaks rendered in soft ink tones.
The bottle is of flattened form with carved mask-and-ring handles to the shoulders and a gently flared neck. The interior painting demonstrates skilled brushwork typical of Inside Painted Glass craftsmanship.
Collectorβs Notes: A Story of Poetry, Mountains, and Quiet Freedom β Somewhere in the mountains of China, a solitary figure moves slowly along a narrow path, unconcerned with destination. This image, long associated with Meng Haoran, embodies the ideal of poetic retreat and harmony with nature.
For centuries, artists depicted the wandering scholar β sometimes linked to figures such as Ruan Ji, Du Fu, or later literary traditions β as a symbol of reflection and quiet independence. The motif of the traveling poet, often accompanied by a servant, represents observation, solitude, and the search for meaning beyond official life.
Prunus blossoms further enrich the symbolism, representing resilience and renewal in winter. Together, these elements make such Snuff Bottles highly collectible, blending refined artistry with deep literary and cultural significance from the Qing Dynasty tradition into the 20th Century. π Condition
