DESCRIPTION

A small Chinese porcelain snuff bottle dating to the Qing period, decorated in famille rose enamels on a white ground. One side depicts a bearded Daoist immortal beside a deer, while the reverse shows another figure within a stylized landscape. Auspicious imagery includes a bat together with colorful green, iron red and black enamel details. The flattened rounded form and lively narrative decoration give the bottle considerable antique character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Daoist immortals, deer and bats belong to the traditional vocabulary of Chinese auspicious imagery, associated with longevity and good fortune. Figural snuff bottles of this type combine a practical miniature form with the narrative and symbolic decoration favored during the Qing period.
