DESCRIPTION
An early 18th century Chinese porcelain handled wine cup dating to the Kangxi period. The exterior is richly decorated in an Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red and gilt highlights, featuring flowering plants, bamboo, rockwork and a flower basket. Further decoration appears around the interior rim with a small iron red floral motif to the center. The cup has a loop handle and a slightly raised circular foot, with gilt detailing around the rim. A decorative example of Qing Dynasty Chinese export porcelain combining strong blue motifs with finely painted red and gilt ornament.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Chinese Imari porcelain developed as an export style combining underglaze blue with iron red and gilding, drawing inspiration from Japanese Imari wares while retaining distinctive Chinese forms and decoration. Kangxi period examples were produced for the expanding European export market and remain a recognizable category of early 18th century Chinese porcelain.
