The center is painted with a lively figural scene identified as Romance of the Western Chamber, surrounded by a bold blue, green and gilt border. The form has a shaped scalloped rim and the reverse is left plain with an unmarked foot. This is a decorative Qing export tea stand with attractive narrative decoration and clear hand-painted character detail.

Collector’s Notes: Romance of the Western Chamber (西厢记) is one of the best-known works of Chinese drama and was a highly popular source for porcelain decoration from the Ming and Qing periods onward. Scenes from the story usually depict the young scholar Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying, often aided by the clever maid Hongniang. Collectors value these wares for their literary subject matter, vivid Clobbered enamels and their connection to Chinese export Porcelain made for the 18th-century taste for narrative and theatrical scenes. 🔍 Condition
