DESCRIPTION

Chinese blue and white porcelain saucer dating to the 18th century. The interior is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a narrative figural scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber. Figures are depicted within an architectural garden setting beneath a tree, surrounded by a decorative border. The varying tones of cobalt blue give the scene a lively and expressive character typical of Qing dynasty narrative porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

The Romance of the Western Chamber is one of China’s most celebrated classical dramas and tells the story of the scholar Zhang and Cui Yingying. Scenes from the romance became popular subjects on Chinese porcelain, allowing recognizable episodes from literature and theatre to be represented through detailed figural compositions. Such narrative decoration was particularly appealing on Qing dynasty porcelain made for both domestic and export markets.
