CONDITION

GOOD (4/5) – Converted to a lamp base with drilled hole to the lower body and fitted electrical mount. Minor glaze wear, firing imperfections, and age-related surface marks. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

A Chinese porcelain baluster vase later converted as a lamp base, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue in the Kangxi revival style. The main scene depicts seated scholars and attendants within an architectural garden setting beneath stylized cloud forms and trees. The tall elegant neck rises to a flared rim with simple blue line borders. The reverse is more sparsely decorated, emphasizing the pictorial front panel. An attractive decorative example of late Qing blue and white porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Blue and white porcelains inspired by Kangxi period wares remained highly popular throughout the late Qing Dynasty. Scholar scenes and literary subjects reflected ideals of learning, refinement, and status within Chinese decorative arts. Many antique porcelains were adapted into lamps during the early to mid 20th century for Western interiors.
