| 📜 Description | Chinese Porcelain bowl decorated in underglaze Blue & White, the interior painted with swimming fish rendered in fluid brushwork. The exterior is finished in a warm Cafe Au Lait glaze, a distinctive feature associated with Kangxi-style wares. The bowl stands on a small foot and bears a blue Mark to the base. Collector’s Notes: In Chinese symbolism, the Carp and Goldfish carry auspicious meanings. The word for goldfish (jin yu) forms a rebus for “gold in abundance,” symbolizing wealth and prosperity. Carp are admired for strength and perseverance, famously associated with the legend of the carp leaping the Dragon Gate, transforming into a dragon — a metaphor for scholarly success and advancement. Fish motifs were widely used from the Ming through Qing Dynasty, particularly on bowls and vessels intended for both daily use and decorative display. |
