DESCRIPTION
A finely carved Chinese bamboo brush pot decorated in high relief with an attractive continuous riverside landscape. The detailed carving depicts boats, figures, trees, pavilions and village architecture in a traditional composition. The bamboo has developed a rich dark brown patina from age and use. An interesting decorative example of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship despite its significant damage.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Carved bamboo brush pots were popular scholar’s desk objects during the Qing Dynasty and were appreciated for their artistic quality as much as their practical use. Examples with detailed landscape scenes remain highly collectible and reflect the refined taste of the Chinese literati.
