DESCRIPTION

An antique English porcelain plate by Davenport, decorated with a colourful botanical arrangement against a white central ground. The floral composition features pink blossoms, deep purple flowers and green foliage together with gilt leaves and stems. A broad peach coloured border surrounds the centre and is finished with gilt lines and a gently shaped rim. The underside bears a Davenport anchor mark. Despite its condition issues, the plate retains strong decorative appeal and is an attractive example of 19th century English floral porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Davenport was an important Staffordshire manufacturer producing earthenware, stoneware and porcelain during the 19th century. Its porcelain wares are collected for their decorative painting, distinctive forms and varied use of gilding and rich border colours. Period Davenport marks and characteristic floral decoration make surviving pieces of interest to collectors of English ceramics.
