📜 Description
Chinese Porcelain plate finely painted in underglaze Blue & White depicting a narrative Figural Scene with three figures in a landscape setting, likely inspired by the famous drama Romance of the Western Chamber. The scene shows scholars and attendants in a garden with rocks and willow trees, enclosed within a geometric Diaper Border. The wide rim is decorated with scrolling floral motifs, and the edge finished with a brown-dressed rim typical of Kangxi period wares.
The reverse is simply glazed with an unglazed footrim, showing kiln characteristics and age-related wear.
Collector’s Notes:
The Romance of the Western Chamber is one of the most celebrated works of Chinese literature, traditionally attributed to Wang Shifu of the Yuan Dynasty. Its romantic narrative between Scholar Zhang and Cui Yingying became an enduring artistic theme, frequently depicted on Blue & White porcelain from the Ming and Qing periods. Plates such as this were appreciated not only for their craftsmanship but also for their storytelling, making them highly collectible among enthusiasts of Chinese narrative ceramics.
